Golf in Algarve: Oscars and records
Golf in Algarve continues to go up and running. Two recent news are clear examples of this.
The World Golf Awards, part of the World Travel Awards, comprise an election by golf industry professionals from over 100 countries, and for this reason, they’re considered the “Oscars” of the industry. The ceremony happened on the last weekend of November, in Spain. Algarve received 2 of the four awards attributed in the country:
- Portugal’s Best Golf Course 2017: Quinta do Lago – South Course
- Portugal’s Best Golf Hotel 2017: Hilton Vilamoura As Cascatas Golf Resort & Spa
Aside of this choice for the Portugal golf awards, the country itself also won the much-desired award for the World’s Best Golf Destination 2017, while being, of course, Europe’s Best also, and the continent’s representative in the nominations for the World’s award.
Record of rounds about to be broken
The ATA (Tourism Board of Algarve) just announced that the region is on its way to reach a new maximum of yearly golf rounds played. In 2016, about 1,3 million rounds were played in the golf courses of the region, what was a 10% rise relating to 2015. This year, the number of 1,17 million was reached just until the end of October, gearing up a hot prospect for the full year result. According to ATA, this means a 4,6% rise compared to the equivalent month last year.
A mature, high-quality sector and leisure option
If more proof was needed for the success and the maturity of the golf industry in Algarve, this news provides strong evidence. Both the clients and the industry peers acknowledge that the infra-structures are great and the region itself offers everything (climate, security, beach, countryside, history and culture, gastronomy, etc.) a golfer would require to spend a great time. Across the region, there are currently more than 40 golf courses.
