Portugal is five-time World Golf Awards champion
Portugal just won, for the 5th time in five editions, the award for World’s Best Golf Destination. The award, considered as the “Oscars of Golf”, was given in the usual ceremony, that this time was held in Spain. The country held off a very strong competition, which included the United States, New Zealand, Vietnam, Abu Dhabi and Argentina.
Aside from the World Award, the country also won Europe’s Best Golf Destination. Although it only hosts one major sports event, it just comes naturally that the world’s best is also Europe’s best.
Algarve gets three awards
Moreover, Algarve achieved three national golf awards in this same ceremony – from the four available. These were the following:
– Monte Rei Golf & Country Club won the “Portugal’s Best Golf Course” category;
– Hilton Vilamoura As Cascatas Golf Resort & Spa is “Portugal’s Best Golf Hotel”;
– Portugal Algarve Golf Services won Portugal’s Best Inbound Golf Tour Operator.
The region only missed Portugal’s Best Outbound Operator, which went to InGolf, a company from the city of Leiria.
An outstanding achievement
Is this the case for Portugal being just “so hot right now”, a trend that will soon be over? Maybe the current popularity of Portugal throughout the world (increased be events like Web Summit) is contributing to this kind of results.
Indeed, the fact that Portugal lies like an international hub, easy reachable to the most of international golf players (more than, for instance, Argentina and New Zealand) does its part. As it does its warm, pleasant weather, a little cooler than Abu Dhabi’s.
But to behave like a juggernaut, insatiably collecting World Golf Awards – there’s something the country as a whole, and especially Algarve which accounts for half of the Portuguese golf course offer, must be doing right. It’s no surprise people keep flocking over here to check with their own eyes.
